- Complete the DS-160 online. Fill out Form DS-160 at ceac.state.gov/genniv. Every answer must match your passport and documents exactly. Print the confirmation page with the barcode for your interview.
- Pay the $185 MRV application fee. Pay the machine-readable visa fee before scheduling; keep the receipt. It is non-refundable. Budget separately for the $250 Visa Integrity Fee once the State Department begins collecting it at issuance (expected before 30 Sept 2026).
- Book your appointment in Ankara or Istanbul. Use the official US visa appointment service for Türkiye to schedule biometrics and the interview at the Embassy (Ankara) or a Consulate (Istanbul, among others). Compare dates and apply early.
- Attend the interview and answer about your ties. The officer is assessing whether you qualify: a refusal under Section 214(b) means they were not convinced you did, and on visitor cases the doubt is usually about whether you will return to Türkiye. Answer briefly and honestly about your work, studies, family, and trip, and bring evidence of ties. Lead with a clear, consistent story.
- After approval: passport return and the I-94. If approved, your passport is returned with the visa (often 10-year) via the courier option you chose. The visa lets you travel TO a US port of entry; CBP sets your authorised stay on your I-94 at arrival. Check it at i94.cbp.dhs.gov and never overstay.

Why are B1/B2 visas refused for Turkish applicants?
Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act presumes every visitor-visa applicant intends to immigrate, and the applicant has to establish that they qualify for the visa they applied for. A refusal under it means the officer was not convinced of that, so a stronger ties picture is usually part of the answer, alongside a documented purpose and a funding story that holds together. A 214(b) refusal cannot be appealed, but you can reapply; only meaningfully stronger evidence changes the outcome. There is no fixed bank-balance requirement, and unexplained recent large deposits tend to hurt rather than help.

First-time applicants must attend an interview.
