The Visitor visa (subclass 600) turns on the genuine visitor requirement: you must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and to obey any condition and stay period attached to your visa. Home Affairs does not usually refund the visa application charge, even if the application is refused.
- Check your passport and gather your documents. You need a valid passport. Gather your identity documents and the documents that show you are a genuine visitor, with English translations of any document that is not in English. Scan or photograph every document in colour, clear and legible, one file per document.
- Apply online through ImmiAccount. Apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream (apply outside Australia). You must be outside Australia when you apply and when Home Affairs decides your application. Tell Home Affairs if someone is helping you with your application.
- Pay the visa application charge. The Tourist stream costs from AUD 250 per applicant; the Visa Pricing Estimator on the Home Affairs site shows your exact price. Home Affairs does not usually refund the charge, even if the application is refused or withdrawn.
- Provide biometrics, health examinations or a police certificate if asked. Home Affairs will tell you if you need to provide biometrics. Health examinations can be done before you apply or when you are told to have them. It may ask you for a police certificate.
- Receive your decision and check VEVO. Home Affairs tells you its decision in writing, with your visa grant number, the date your visa starts and your visa conditions. The visa is digitally linked to your passport; use VEVO to prove you have a visa and to show your conditions.
常见问题
Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Passports of the People's Republic of China are not on the list of ETA-eligible passports on the Home Affairs Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) page, and Home Affairs says European passport holders may be eligible for the eVisitor (subclass 651). Chinese citizens apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600). To visit as a tourist or to see family and friends that is the Tourist stream (apply outside Australia), lodged online through ImmiAccount.
How much does an Australian Visitor visa cost for Chinese citizens?
The Tourist stream (apply outside Australia) costs from AUD 250 per applicant on the Home Affairs visa page (checked 12 October 2026), and the Visa Pricing Estimator works out your exact price. You might also pay for health checks, police certificates and biometrics. Home Affairs does not usually refund the visa application charge, even if the application is refused or withdrawn. You cannot include family members in your application: each family member, including those listed on your passport, must apply separately.
How do I apply, and is there an interview?
You apply online through ImmiAccount, upload your documents and pay the charge. Home Affairs says it may decide your application without asking you for more information, so include as much supporting information as you can, with English translations of any document that is not in English. It will tell you if you need to provide biometrics, and you can complete health examinations before you apply or wait until you are told to have them. The step-by-step guide for the Tourist stream has no interview step.
How long does an Australian Visitor visa take for Chinese citizens?
Home Affairs' processing times guide is a guide only and is not specific to your application. On 12 October 2026 it showed 50% of Tourist stream applications processed in 21 days and 90% in 33 days. Home Affairs says a visa may take longer if the information required is incomplete or missing, so apply well ahead of your travel dates.
What does the genuine visitor requirement ask for?
Home Affairs lists "be a genuine visitor" as a basic eligibility requirement: you must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and to obey any condition and stay period attached to your visa. You must also have enough money for your stay and to leave Australia, meet the health and character requirements, and have repaid any debt to the Australian government. If your application is refused, Home Affairs writes to tell you why and whether you have a right to a review.
What documents does Home Affairs list?
Identity: the pages of your passport showing your photo, personal details and issue and expiry dates, a national identity card if you have one, and proof of a change of name if it applies. To show you are a temporary visitor, Home Affairs suggests proof you have enough money for your stay and to leave Australia (such as itemised personal bank statements for a 3 month period, pay slips, audited accounts, tax records, term deposits or credit card statements), a letter from a relative or friend in Australia inviting you (with proof of their funds if they will pay), and proof of reasons to return home (such as a letter from your employer saying you plan to return to your job, proof that you study, immediate family at home, or a house or other major assets). You do not need to have documents certified unless Home Affairs asks.
Will I need a police certificate?
Home Affairs says it may ask you to provide a police certificate, and you must meet its character requirement. If it asks, arrange the certificate promptly. A police certificate can be an extra cost, as can health checks and biometrics.
How long can I stay, and is the visa electronic?
Home Affairs generally grants a stay of 3 months and might grant a stay of up to 12 months in certain circumstances, decided case by case, so you might not get the length of stay you ask for. The visa can be single entry or multiple entry. It is digitally linked to your passport and you will not get a label in your passport; check your conditions in VEVO or your grant letter. You cannot extend this visa: you would have to apply for another visa in Australia, and a condition such as 8503 (No Further Stay) can prevent that.
Do I need health insurance?
Home Affairs says you are liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia and strongly recommends that you take out adequate health insurance. In some circumstances it might grant your visa with Condition 8501 (Maintain adequate health insurance).
Is there a longer visa for Chinese citizens who visit Australia often?
Home Affairs describes the Frequent Traveller stream of the Visitor visa (subclass 600) as for citizens of the People's Republic of China, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam or Timor-Leste who travel often to Australia for tourism or business visitor activities. It can be granted for up to 10 years with a stay of up to 3 months each time you enter, it costs AUD 1,845, and you must be outside Australia when you apply and when it is decided. Home Affairs lists processing times for this stream as unavailable, so check its stream page before you plan around it.
Is there a visa for organised tour groups from China?
Home Affairs describes the Approved Destination Status stream of the Visitor visa (subclass 600) as for citizens of certain areas of China visiting Australia on a tour organised by an approved travel agent. It lets citizens of the People's Republic of China (excluding the special administrative regions) visit with an organised tour group, you must remain with the group, the stay is for the period or until the date in your grant letter, and it costs AUD 250.
