Canada Visa for South Africa Citizens: The Definitive 2026 Guide

South African citizens need a visitor visa to travel to Canada. Here is how the process works: the IRCC fees, applying online, giving biometrics at a visa application centre and the documents to prepare.

    A visa is required

South African citizens generally need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to come to Canada. IRCC's eTA page lists the visa-required countries whose citizens can apply for an eTA instead of a visa, and South Africa is not on it.

IRCC says you must obtain the visa before you leave. You cannot obtain one on arrival in Canada.

Core Requirements for South Africa Applicants

To get a visitor visa (temporary resident visa), you must satisfy an IRCC officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay and that you have enough money to support yourself and any family with you in Canada and to return home. The items below are what you prepare and pay for.

    Visa Fee & Biometrics
Application: $100 CAD per person (maximum $500 CAD for a family of 5 or more applying at the same time and place). Biometrics: $85 CAD per person (maximum $170 CAD for a family of 2 or more applying at the same time and place). Total IRCC fees for one adult who needs to give biometrics: $185 CAD. Pay online to IRCC. Fees can change at any time and are not refunded, whatever the decision. Visa application centres charge their own service fees on top, for example to send your passport to the visa office.
    Valid Passport
IRCC says to make sure your passport is valid for the entire time you will be in Canada and has at least one blank page. Its paper-route guide specifies a blank page other than the last page. For applications from outside Canada, follow the instructions of the visa office responsible for your region.
    Application Form (IMM 5257)
Most people must apply online. Paper applications are only for people who cannot apply online, for example because of a disability, or who travel on a document issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen. The paper route uses the Application for Temporary Resident Visa (IMM 5257), filled out on a computer, then signed and dated. IRCC returns unsigned forms.
Family Information Form (IMM 5707 or IMM 5645)
IRCC's paper-route guide says each applicant aged 18 or older completes the Family Information form listed in the application package for their country.
    Photographs
IRCC's paper-route guide says that if you give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo), you do not need to include paper photos. Otherwise its photograph specifications ask for two identical photos taken in the last six months, printed on quality photographic paper, with a frame of at least 35 mm x 45 mm, a plain white or light-coloured background and a neutral expression. Religious head coverings are allowed if your full face is visible.
    Biometrics Appointment
Most applicants give biometrics, once every 10 years. If you need to give them, IRCC sends a Biometric Instruction Letter after you apply, and you book an appointment at a VFS Global visa application centre in Cape Town or Pretoria. VFS Global says booking is free.

    How the Application Process Works

IRCC and VFS Global publish the steps for applicants in South Africa. These are the points that decide how you apply and how long it takes:

What IRCC and VFS Global say:
Most people must apply online. Paper applications are only for people who cannot apply online
After you apply and pay, IRCC sends a Biometric Instruction Letter, and you then book a visa application centre appointment to give your biometrics
You can only submit your passport to a visa application centre after IRCC sends you a request letter or email, and you then have 30 days to submit it
Processing times vary from one visa office to another, and IRCC publishes the current times on its website

    Practical Tips

    • • Give your biometrics promptly once the Biometric Instruction Letter arrives.
    • • Do not send your passport until IRCC asks for it.
    • • Keep proof of your funds and of your ties to South Africa, such as employment, family or property. VFS Global lists both among the documents you generally need, along with a travel itinerary.
    • • Make sure your documents agree with each other, for example the income on your bank statements and the income your employer states.

    Next Steps

Check your documents against the requirements before you book your biometrics appointment. TravelReady's Smart Visa Checklist shows what your application needs, so you can fix gaps before you submit.

Does your case trigger the South Africa → Canada risk patterns?

Knowing the failure modes is not the same as knowing whether they apply to your documents. Officer's Read cross-references your specific employment letter, bank statement, and cover letter against current Canada embassy rules, the way an officer would, and flags what would be questioned before you submit.

What we check that this guide can't:

    • →Whether your funds and employment ties would satisfy an IRCC officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay
    • →Whether your travel history and documentation are consistent enough to avoid a weak-ties refusal
    • →Whether a recent large deposit has a documented source
