Sri Lanka is on the UK visa national list, so Sri Lankan citizens generally need a visa before a visit. A Standard Visitor visa is decided against the eligibility requirements in Appendix V: Visitor, which include the genuine visitor requirement in paragraph V 4.2: you must satisfy the decision maker that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your main home, are genuinely seeking entry for a permitted visitor purpose, will not undertake prohibited activities and have sufficient funds without working or accessing public funds. GOV.UK says you will not get a refund of the application fee if your application is refused.
- Check you are applying for the right visa. GOV.UK lists the Standard Visitor visa for tourism, seeing family or friends, certain business activities such as attending a meeting or interview, study or a placement or an exam, a recreational course of up to 30 days, medical reasons, transit and volunteering for up to 30 days with a registered charity, among other permitted activities. You can usually stay up to 6 months. You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person (except a permitted paid engagement or event). GOV.UK says you need a family visa to live with a family member in the UK for more than 6 months.
- Apply online on GOV.UK. Apply for a Standard Visitor visa online before you travel. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. The fee is £135 for up to 6 months and is not refunded if your application is refused.
- Check whether you need a TB test. GOV.UK says you need a TB test if you are coming for 6 months or more, have lived in a listed country, such as Sri Lanka, for 6 months or more, and were living there or in another listed country within the last 6 months. The test must be from a clinic approved by the Home Office; GOV.UK lists one in Sri Lanka, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) clinic in Colombo. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray.
- Attend your visa application centre appointment. Processing starts when you attend your appointment at a visa application centre for your fingerprints and photograph or, where UKVI tells you that you can use it, when you verify your identity and submit your documents in the UK Immigration: ID Check app. GOV.UK's centre finder lists Sri Lanka with a link to the VFS Global page for UK visa applications there, and you must apply before you can book an appointment.
- Gather your documents. Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. Be ready to show you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, can support yourself and can pay for your return or onward journey. Use GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents, and provide certified translations of any document that is not in English or Welsh.
- Wait for your decision, then check your eVisa. GOV.UK lists 3 weeks and says you should not book travel until you have a decision. UKVI stopped issuing visa stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, so before you travel sign in to your UKVI account to view your eVisa and check your permission.
常见问题
Do Sri Lankan citizens need a visa for the UK?
Yes. Sri Lanka is on the UK visa national list (Appendix Visitor: Visa National List), so Sri Lankan citizens generally need a visa before they travel for a visit. You apply online on GOV.UK before you travel, then give your fingerprints and a photograph at a visa application centre appointment or, where UKVI tells you that you can use it, verify your identity in the UK Immigration: ID Check app.
How much does a UK visitor visa cost for Sri Lankans?
A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for up to 6 months. Long-term visit visas cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years on the GOV.UK fee schedule that applies from 8 October 2026, which shows no change from the previous schedule. You will not get a refund of the application fee if you get a shorter visa or if your application is refused. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.
How long does a UK visitor visa take?
GOV.UK lists 3 weeks for a Standard Visitor visa applied for outside the UK. Processing starts once you attend your appointment at a visa application centre to give your fingerprints and photograph or, where UKVI tells you that you can use it, once you verify your identity and submit your documents in the UK Immigration: ID Check app. GOV.UK says you should not book travel until you have a decision, and UKVI will not reimburse travel costs or other expenses if your application is refused or takes longer than expected.
Do Sri Lankan applicants need a TB test?
GOV.UK says you need a TB test if all three of these are true: you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more, you have lived in a listed country for 6 months or more, and you were living there or in another listed country within the last 6 months. Sri Lanka is on the list. The test must be from a clinic approved by the Home Office, and GOV.UK's page for Sri Lanka, last updated on 4 July 2024, lists one: the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sri Lanka clinic at the IOM Migration Health Assessment Center, 11th Floor, Institute of Bankers Sri Lanka, 80A Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo-08. The page gives the test fee as 60 US dollars for applicants aged 11 and above and 30 US dollars for those below 11, paid in local currency directly to the clinic. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. For a visit, GOV.UK's page on applying for a Standard Visitor visa asks for a TB certificate if you are visiting for more than 6 months, while the TB guide says 6 months or more, so if your stay would be exactly 6 months check both pages before you apply. The TB guide also names two visas that need a test even for a stay of less than 6 months, the Returning Resident visa and a family visa as a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner. The Standard Visitor visa is not one of them.
Does the UK still put visa stickers in passports?
No. GOV.UK says UKVI stopped issuing visa vignettes (stickers) to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026. Before you travel to the UK you will need to sign in to your UKVI account to view your eVisa and check your permission. If you are issued with a form for accompanying an eVisa (FAV), you will usually need to return to the visa application centre to collect it.
What does the genuine visitor requirement ask for?
Appendix V: Visitor, paragraph V 4.2 says you must satisfy the decision maker that you are a genuine visitor, which means you (a) will leave the UK at the end of your visit, (b) will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home, (c) are genuinely seeking entry for a permitted visitor purpose, (d) will not undertake prohibited activities and (e) have sufficient funds for reasonable costs without working or accessing public funds. It adds that any funds you rely on must be held in a financial institution permitted under FIN 2.1 in Appendix Finance. GOV.UK says you cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person (except a permitted paid engagement or event), claim public funds, or live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent or successive visits.
What documents does GOV.UK suggest for a visitor application?
You must have a passport valid for the whole of your stay. GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents says its list is not exhaustive. It recommends a letter from your employer on company headed paper detailing your role, salary and length of employment, and it lists bank statements that detail the origin of the funds held, which must clearly show that you have access to the funds. It says statements issued more than 1 year before the date of application are less useful, and lists credit card statements, hotel bookings, flight bookings (unless transiting) and travel insurance as less useful evidence. Documents not in English or Welsh need a full translation that can be independently verified, and GOV.UK's apply page says the translations must be certified.
A relative is paying for my trip. What do I show?
Appendix V: Visitor, paragraph V 4.3 lets a third party provide your travel, maintenance and accommodation only if the third party has a genuine professional or personal relationship with you, is not, or will not be, in breach of immigration laws at the time of the decision or of your entry to the UK, and can and will support you for the intended length of your stay. GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents says that if someone else, such as a family member or your employer, is providing these you should provide evidence of what support is being provided and how, that the person supporting you has enough funds to adequately support themselves and their dependents, your relationship to that person and, where it applies, that they are legally in the UK, for example with a British passport or residence document. The same guide lists a sponsor's utility bills and council tax bills among the documents that are less useful as evidence in visit applications, and it gives no minimum amount of money for the trip.
I want to study in the UK. Is a Standard Visitor visa enough?
It depends on the course. GOV.UK says you can visit for up to 6 months to study at an accredited institution, on a course that is no more than 6 months long (unless it is a distance learning course), and that a Standard Visitor can also do a recreational course of up to 30 days. To study for more than 6 months it says you need a Short-term study visa (English language courses up to 11 months), a Student visa (courses run by licensed student sponsors) or a Child Student visa. For a Student visa, GOV.UK says you must have enough money to pay for your course for 1 academic year (up to 9 months), the amount shown on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, and enough to support yourself: £1,529 per month for up to 9 months for courses in London, or £1,171 per month for up to 9 months for courses outside London. You must have held this money for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the date you apply. Coming for 6 months or more also brings in the TB test rule above for people who have been living in Sri Lanka, and a visa of more than 6 months applied for outside the UK usually brings in the Immigration Health Surcharge, at the student rate of £776 per year.
Can I work in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa?
No. GOV.UK says you cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person on a Standard Visitor visa, unless you are doing a permitted paid engagement or event. If you want to work in the UK, look on GOV.UK for the work visa that fits your job before you apply.
Do I pay the Immigration Health Surcharge for a visit?
No. GOV.UK says you do not need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge if you are applying for a visitor visa, or for a visa of 6 months or less from outside the UK, and that you will need to pay for any NHS care you get at the point you use it unless it is a service that is free. For the applications it does apply to, the surcharge is £1,035 per year for most applicants, and £776 per year for students, their dependants, Youth Mobility Scheme applicants and applicants under 18.
What happens if my UK visitor visa is refused?
GOV.UK says you will not get a refund of the application fee if your application is refused. If you apply again, read your refusal notice first and answer the reasons it gives.
