Since February 2024 most Mexican citizens need a Canadian visitor visa (TRV), decided on whether the officer is satisfied you will leave under section 179. Refusals cite weak ties, unclear funds, or an unclear purpose, and the fee is not refunded, though some travellers qualify for the faster eTA instead (see below).
- Check whether you need a TRV or qualify for an eTA. If you are flying AND hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, or have held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years, apply for the eTA. Otherwise, or if arriving by land/sea, apply for the visitor visa (TRV).
- For an eTA: apply online (CAD $7). Complete the short eTA application at canada.ca; it is usually approved within minutes to days and is linked to your passport. Confirm your US visa is valid on the day you apply.
- For a TRV: apply online through IRCC and pay. Create your IRCC account, complete the visitor visa application, and pay the CAD $100 fee plus CAD $85 biometrics. Answer every question consistently with your documents.
- Give biometrics at a Canada VAC. For the TRV, after the Biometric Instruction Letter, attend a Canada Visa Application Centre (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey) within about 30 days. Processing starts only after this step.
- Submit strong supporting documents (TRV). Provide proof of funds with a stable history, evidence of ties to Mexico, a clear purpose and itinerary, and an invitation plus host documents if visiting family. Consistency satisfies the section 179 intent-to-leave test.
- Travel and check your permitted stay. Whether on an eTA or TRV, the document gets you to a Canadian port of entry; the border officer sets your actual permitted stay on arrival, usually up to six months. Extend from inside Canada before your status expires if needed.
Perguntas frequentes
Do Mexican citizens need a visa for Canada in 2026?
Most do. Canada changed the rules in February 2024: most Mexican citizens now need a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) to enter Canada. However, you may use the faster, cheaper eTA instead if you currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, OR you have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years, and you are travelling by air. Everyone else needs a TRV.
When can I use an eTA instead of a visa?
You are eligible for an eTA (rather than a TRV) if you are flying to Canada AND either (a) you hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, or (b) you have held a Canadian visitor visa within the last 10 years. Important limits: the eTA is for air travel only, if you arrive by land or sea (car, bus, train, cruise) you need a visitor visa regardless. If you do not meet either condition, you must apply for a TRV.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
The eTA costs CAD $7 and is usually approved within minutes to a few days. The visitor visa (TRV) costs CAD $100 plus CAD $85 for biometrics (valid 10 years) and takes several weeks. Check the live IRCC processing estimate for Mexico and apply two to three months ahead if you need the TRV; biometrics are given at a Canada Visa Application Centre (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey).
Why are Canadian visitor visas refused for Mexican applicants?
For the TRV, section 179 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations requires the officer to be satisfied you will leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Refusals typically cite weak ties to Mexico (employment, business, family, property), insufficient or unexplained funds, or an unclear purpose. Consistent, well-documented finances and clear ties beat a high last-minute balance.
I have a US visa, what should I do?
If you hold a valid US non-immigrant visa and are flying to Canada, apply for the eTA (CAD $7) rather than the visitor visa, it is far faster and cheaper. Make sure the US visa is valid on the day you apply for the eTA. If you will arrive by land or sea, or you do not hold a US visa and have not held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years, you need the TRV instead.
Can a visitor visa or eTA lead to studying or working?
No, they are for short visits. To study you need a study permit; to work you generally need a work permit; permanent residence runs through programmes such as Express Entry. Do not use visitor status as a backdoor, misrepresenting your purpose is a serious refusal and bar risk.
How long can I stay?
Whether you enter on an eTA or a TRV, a border services officer decides how long you may stay on each visit, usually up to six months. Check the date the officer gives you (or the stamp), and apply to extend your stay as a visitor from inside Canada before your status expires if you need longer.
