What is a transit visa?

A transit visa is a short-term visa that allows you to pass through a country on your way to a final destination. Some countries require one even if you never leave the airport.

Do I need a transit visa if I don't leave the airport?

It depends on your nationality and the transit country. Some countries, like the UK (DATV) and Schengen zone (ATV), require airport transit visas for certain nationalities even for airside-only connections.

What is a DATV (Direct Airside Transit Visa)?

A DATV is required by the UK for nationals of certain countries who transit through a UK airport without passing through border control. Some document holders are exempt, and the exemption depends on the document and on the route. For example, an Irish biometric visa endorsed BC or BC BIVS can count for an airside connection only when your next flight goes somewhere other than Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. And if you must enter the UK, to re-check a bag or on a connection to or from Ireland, a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand visa can count only on a journey to or from that country, and an immigration officer decides. The checker applies those conditions to your specific itinerary rather than assuming them.

What is a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (ATV)?

A Schengen ATV is required for nationals of 12 countries (EU Annex IV list) when transiting through any Schengen-area airport. Certain US, Canadian or Schengen documents can waive it, and as with the UK the waiver depends on the document and on the route. Individual Schengen states may also apply their own national lists, which is why each result names the rule it used.

Can my airline deny boarding even if no transit visa is required?

Yes. Airlines are legally liable for passengers refused at transit points, so they may apply stricter rules than the government. Always confirm transit requirements directly with your operating airline before travel.

Does the transit visa checker cover all countries?

The tool covers the transit hubs that decide most connections, including the UK, Schengen zone, Turkey, Qatar, UAE, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt. Every rule names the source it came from and the date it was last checked. Where a rule could not be confirmed against two independent sources, the checker says so and tells you to confirm with your airline instead of giving you a confident answer it cannot support.

What does "not confirmed for your trip" mean next to a result?

Every stop gets one of two answers: a transit visa is required, or it is not. Sometimes the published rule depends on something your details did not settle, for example a visa waiver that only applies when your journey is to or from the country that issued the visa, or a hub whose airside allowance depends on which airport you connect through. The checker then shows the safer answer, required, and says it is not confirmed for your trip. The result tells you what is missing and what to check. If the condition turns out to apply to you, the visa may not be needed, so confirm with your airline before you apply.

What should I do if the checker says I need a visa?

Apply through the embassy or consulate of the transit country before you book non-refundable tickets. Each result links the official page it came from, and several hubs also take applications online. Apply early: some transit visas take several working days, and airlines check transit documents at the departure gate before you fly. If the result says transit visas are currently suspended for a stop, applying will not help, so ask your airline about rerouting before you book.

UK · DATV (Direct Airside Transit Visa)

The UK requires nationals of certain countries to obtain a DATV to transit airside through UK airports, even without passing through border control. A valid US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand visa, an Irish biometric visa endorsed BC or BC BIVS, or a long-stay (category D) visa or residence permit from an EEA country or Switzerland can waive it. An ordinary short-stay Schengen visa does not. A connection to or from Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands counts as entering the UK, where a different list applies. A Direct Airside Transit visa costs £41.50 on gov.uk.

Schengen Zone · Airport Transit Visa (ATV)

The EU requires nationals of 12 countries (Annex IV list) to hold an ATV for transiting through Schengen-area airports. Certain US, Canadian, Japanese or Schengen documents can waive it, and the waiver depends on the document and on your route. Individual Schengen states may maintain additional national ATV lists.

Qatar · Airside Transit + Optional Transit Visa

No visa is required for airside transit at Hamad International Airport (DOH). To leave the airport during a layover, a Qatar Transit Visa is available for eligible passengers, valid for up to 4 days (3 nights), applied for through Discover Qatar. It costs QAR 100 per applicant and the process takes at least 3 working days, so arrange it before you fly.

Turkey · Conditional e-Visa for Exit

Airside transit through Istanbul does not require a visa for most nationalities. Two exceptions matter: ten nationalities need a free electronic Airport Transit Visa (e-ATV) even airside at IST when the onward flight goes to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela, and if you want to leave the airport you may need a Turkish e-Visa unless you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa. Confirm eligibility at evisa.gov.tr.
