UK visitor visas are decided on the papers with no interview, on the genuine-visitor test in Appendix V paragraph V 4.2(a), the officer must be satisfied you will leave at the end of your visit. Sri Lankan applicants are most often refused for financial or employment evidence that does not tell one consistent story, and the £135 fee is not refunded.
- Choose the correct visa route. Pick the right category before paying: Standard Visitor (up to 6 months), Student, Skilled Worker, or Family. Applying under the wrong route is a refusal regardless of your evidence.
- Apply online at gov.uk. Complete the application at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa (not third-party sites). The Standard Visitor fee is £135 for up to 6 months; the Student Route and work routes cost more and add the Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge if applicable. Required for any visa over 6 months, currently £776/year for students and £1,035/year for most adults, paid online before booking biometrics.
- Take the TB test if your visa is over 6 months. For study, work, and family routes, test at a Home Office-approved clinic in Colombo first. The certificate is valid 6 months; you cannot complete a long-stay application without it.
- Book biometrics at VFS Global Colombo. Attend VFS Global in Colombo for fingerprints and a photo. Students should bring the CAS letter and 28-day maintenance statements; bring all original supporting documents.
- Submit documents, then collect your eVisa. Upload or hand in your documents. Standard visitor processing is about 15 working days; once approved, link your UKVI account, there is no physical visa or BRP.
Perguntas frequentes
Do Sri Lankan citizens need a visa for the UK?
Yes. Sri Lankan passport holders need a visa for every UK purpose, visitor, study, work, family. There is no visa-waiver arrangement and no Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) option for Sri Lanka, so you apply through the standard UKVI route at gov.uk before travelling.
How much does a UK visitor visa cost for Sri Lankans?
The Standard Visitor visa is £135 for up to 6 months (the Home Office schedule effective 8 April 2026). Long-validity visitor visas (2, 5, and 10 years) cost more. The fee is paid online and is non-refundable whether or not the visa is granted; confirm the current figure at gov.uk before paying.
Is the TB test mandatory for Sri Lankan applicants?
Yes, for any UK visa of more than 6 months (Student, Skilled Worker, Family). Sri Lanka is on the UK TB-testing list, so you must test at a Home Office-approved clinic in Colombo before applying; the certificate is valid 6 months. Standard Visitor visas of 6 months or less do not require a TB certificate.
Does the UK still issue physical BRP cards to Sri Lankans in 2026?
No. UKVI completed the move to a fully digital eVisa system, and new grants are recorded solely as eVisas in your UKVI account at gov.uk/evisa, there is no card or passport sticker. Airlines and border officers verify your status electronically, so create and link your UKVI account before you travel and use View and Prove to generate a Share Code when needed.
Why are UK visitor visas refused for Sri Lankan applicants?
Most refusals turn on the genuine-visitor requirement in Appendix V paragraph V 4.2(a): the caseworker is not satisfied you will leave at the end of the stay. Because the decision is made on documents, the common triggers are financial evidence that does not match your stated income, a sudden large deposit before applying, or inconsistent employment and bank letters. A stable six-month history and consistent documents are what convince the officer.
How much maintenance does the UK Student Route require?
For courses starting in 2025-2026, you must show £1,529/month × 9 months = £13,761 if studying in London, or £1,171/month × 9 months = £10,539 outside London, held in a qualifying account for a continuous 28-day period ending within 31 days of applying, in addition to first-year tuition if unpaid. A single dip below the required balance during the 28 days can cause refusal. Confirm the current figures at gov.uk/student-visa/money.
Can I reapply after a UK visa refusal from Sri Lanka?
Yes, there is no waiting period and no limit on reapplications, but reapplying without addressing the exact reason in your refusal notice almost always produces a second refusal. The letter cites specific paragraphs (for example V 4.2(a) or a Student Route finance/credibility ground); your new application must answer those concerns directly with new evidence.
